Physicians will not be bullied into bankruptcy. Our system needs reform, but what's being hammered out in Washington is not the answer.

Two weeks ago the Mayo Clinic shocked the nation when it closed the doors of one of its Arizona clinics to patients on Medicare. Just this past June President Obama himself praised Mayo as a model of medical efficiency noting that Mayo gives “the highest quality care at costs well below the national norm.” If Mayo feels compelled to walk away from this government-run program, others will surely follow. The nation must understand why.

Doctors are leaving Medicare for two reasons: one obvious, the other more concealed.

The first is simple—the math:

1) For the past decade Medicare consistently paid physicians 20% less than traditional insurance companies for identical service.

2) On January 1, 2010 Washington made hidden cuts to Medicare by altering its billing codes.

3) Medicare will cut physician reimbursement by another 21% on March 1. The CBO said this cut must take place if the Senate healthcare bill was to “reduced the deficit.”

4) Even more, Congress pledged to cut Medicare by yet another $500 billion.

Again, the CBO said this additional cut must take place if the Senate healthcare bill was to “reduced the deficit.”

Many physicians were operating at a loss even before this series of massive cuts. In 2008, Mayo Clinic posted an $840 million loss in caring for Medicare patients.

No businesses can survive when patient care expenses exceed revenue.

The second is more ominous—Washington’s increasingly abusive posture toward physicians.

President Obama reflected this attitude last summer. On national television, he stated as fact a surgeon is paid between $30,000 and $50,000 for amputating a patient’s foot. [Ed note: yet another untruth from ObamaWorld]

In reality, a surgeon is paid between $740 and $1,140 to perform this unfortunate, but often life-saving procedure. This reimbursement must cover a pre-operative evaluation the day of surgery, the surgery, and follow-up for 90 days after surgery—not to mention malpractice insurance, salaries for clinic nurses, and clinic overhead. It is frightening to think our president is so wildly misinformed even as he stands on the cusp of overhauling American health care.

But it gets worse.

Given massive federal deficits, Washington now faces increasing pressure to cut Medicare spending. One way to do this is to intimidate physicians into under-billing. To do this Washington intends to spend tax payer dollars to ramp up physician audits using Recovery Audit Contractors (RAC audits) to randomly investigate private physician’s Medicare billing.

A physician group at my hospital recently experienced an AdvanceMed audit, an earlier version of the RAC. For a year Medicare auditors made their practice a living hell, making them question if it was worth caring for Medicare patients at all.

An independent reviewer (who was paid a percentage of the audit) reviewed 86 patient records and “found” the physicians had “fraudulently billed” Medicare for $351,820. After spending a year fighting the allegations, eventually, eventually all charges were dropped. The physician group was vindicated but only after spending almost $100,000 defending themselves. The independent reviewers were clearly after money, not justice.

For example, one patient the auditor alleged the group had “fraudulently” billed for was a man undergoing a chemical stress test. The allegation was the patient should have undergone a cheaper traditional treadmill stress test. The difficulty with this accusation was this man was a double amputee—he had no legs. This made a traditional treadmill test impossible. The auditors clearly were not trained health care professionals—they were bounty hunters. (It is worth noting the investigators are given legal immunity from a countersuit for conducting a “fraudulent investigation.”)

This story is not unique. To reduce Medicare’s budget shortfall physicians are being subjected to these abusive investigations nationwide. If medicine increasingly falls under government control, why should the best and the brightest of our youth give up 15 years of their life to go into medicine?

The relationship between the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services and the average working physician has become abusive. Mayo is but the first to make the leap to less government control by closing its doors to some patients on Medicare.

Washington, slow down and listen; reconsider what you are about to do.

Physicians cannot be bullied into bankruptcy. Our system needs reform, but this is not it. If you continue on your present course, sadly, it will be our seniors that pay the price.

Last week’s announcement that AARP will secretly meet again this year with the “Cut Social Security Crowd” indicates the Social Security debate is heating up again as Congress confronts what to do about theautomatic spending cuts (the so-call “Sequester”) scheduled to kick in at the beginning of 2013.  The Sequester Spending Cuts exempt Social Security from cuts so the Washington elites who want to cut SocialSecurity must find some way to derail or reroute the Sequester to include Social security. 

To soften up seniors last year, AARP first put out a feeler when a top AARP official told the Wall Street Journal the organization was open to cuts to the entitlement programs, including Social Security. Thisbetrayal of senior citizens came during the discussions of a so-called “grand bargain” on deficit reduction, involving tax hikes and Social Security cuts, which supposedly would have trimmed $4 trillion off the deficit in 10 years.  While these talks were under way, the AARP board voted to drop its opposition to Social Security cuts.

You know AARP is one of the most powerful lobby groups in Washington.  It has hoodwinked seniors for a half century hiding behind the sweet face of Betty White and the authoritative voice of Morgan Freeman.  While AARP earns billions of dollars selling seniors insurance they could just as well purchase at better prices elsewhere, AARP works behind the scenes with Washington politicians to expand government and raise taxes at seniors’ expense.  Don’t forget, when it came time to slash Medicare $550 billion to pay for the new ObamaCare welfare program, AARP was right there to help President Obama do the dirty deed.

Now, AARP is up to no good again.  

Last week the Huffington Post was leaked an AARP invitation to a secret“Relaxed and Robust Evening of 'Salon Style' Conversation” to be held at a Capitol Hill home on March 27 to discuss the future of Social Security.  The invitation to this clandestine strategy session with known Social Security slashers indicates that AARP is still very much interested in a “grand-bargain” style deal that includes tax increases and cuts to Social Security benefits. 

The AARP invitation reads: "As Congress and the administration continue to debate the critical economic choices confronting the nation, Barry Rand is convening a group of senior-level principals for an informal salon-style conversation to discuss the importance of strengthening and preserving Social Security."  Note the Code Words:  “strengthening and preserving Social Security.”  

TRANSLATION:  CUTTING SOCIAL SECURITY BENEFITS.

The 2012 salon is scheduled to take place at the Capitol Hill home of Robert Raben, a lobbyist with The Raben Group, a liberal lobbying group that includes among its clients an anti-gun group, Service Employees International Union (SEIU), the National Education Association (NEA) and the UN Foundation.

Seniors have learned that when politicians and traitorous seniors groups say the words “tax reform,” they really mean “tax increases.”  Well, you better add a new section to your codebook for understanding what is going on in Washington.  When politicians and traitorous seniors groups say the words “strengthening and preserving Social Security,” they really mean “cutting Social Security benefits, raising taxes on some seniors and turning Social Security into a welfare program.”

If AARP is so concerned about the dangers of the federal deficit, why don’t they give that $18 million back?  Maybe because they already spent it. The AARP Foundation’s 2008 IRS 990 form lists executive salaries as follows:

No business willingly suffers the kind of brand damage supporting Social Security cuts will mean for AARP.  So, why are they doing it?  One can only conclude AARP’s support for Social Security cuts, like its previous support for Medicare cuts is a “lost leader,” a stalking horse for its real master—the Obama Administration and the liberal establishment in Washington.  

And one other thing, AARP would not be so open about what it is up to unless the deal was already in the works, and it is.  There is a bipartisan consensus among Washington elites that Social Security benefits must be cut, people must be forced to work longer and Social Security must be transformed from an earned-benefits program into another welfare program.

Research questions about domestic terrorists

In the African American community, there is a commonly held belief that slavery, something that had roots in unfortunate events from well over 150 years ago, is the root cause of the plight of poverty in the African Americans today.

It appears that, in a small segment of this community, slavery is considered an excuse for not trying and failure. A growing middle class in the African American community contradicts this old excuse as do million of immigrants. They come to the USA with nothing and then bring themselves out of poverty with beliefs related to family values, education and work.

Let us turn to the domestic terrorists who commit terrible atrocities. When considering the mass shootings today, I would want to know more about the history of these shooters. News reports indicate that there are no definable characteristics [i.e., profiles] to forewarn us that these people might be dangerous to society.

If I were a reporter or researcher, I would want to learn who these young terrorists were growing up and who they were today.

What do we know about the history of these young domestic terrorists like the ones in Arizona, Colorado and Wisconsin.

Some of the questions I might ask of their parents, friends, teachers  and other adults around them are outlined below. They are …

• What values were they taught by their immediate family members?

• What teachers were influential in their young lives?

• What did they see and what did they know?

• What other adults were influential in their young lives?

• Did they go to church and who influenced their values?

• Who and What was influential in their lives?

• Who influenced and shaped their values system?

• Who were their friends growing up?

• Loners and outcasts have few close friends and can find themselves in trouble in school? Is that true of these people?

• Were people close to them able to spot noticeable changes in their behavior at some time?

As a researcher, I believe that it would be possible to develop more clear ideas about what went on in the lives of these people earlier, their beliefs and their values. Research like this may not stop this type of terrorism. However, it would most likely uncover information for parents and other adults that would help everyone understand how they influence on young minds. =TheRightJack on 8/7/12

"Dear Sean,

Today I was incensed at the conclusion of a traditional Serbian-Orthodox funeral for my beloved 85-year-old uncle, Daniel Martich, who proudly served in the US Army during the Korean conflict. During the committal service at a Pittsburgh cemetery the local military detachment performed their ritual, then folded and presented the American Flag to my aunt.

As I'm sure you have witnessed during military funerals, a soldier bends to one knee and recites a scripted message to a surviving relative that begins, 

'On behalf of the President of the United States and a grateful nation, I wish to present you with this flag in appreciation for your husband's service ...'

However, today the dialogue was 'On behalf of the Secretary of Defense and a grateful nation ...'

After the service, I approached the soldier who presented the flag to my aunt to inquire about the change in language. His response was: "The White House notified all military funeral service detachments to immediately remove 'the President' and insert 'the Secretary of Defense'.

I couldn't believe what I heard! The soldier just smiled and said, "You can draw your own conclusion, Sir, but that was the order". He, too, was ashamed of what he was required to say.

Obama has taken off the gloves. My only response to this endless cesspool of anti-American rhetoric dripping from his mouth is to borrow a phrase, "with one minor change" uttered by another temporary Washington resident living in government housing (his wife!) 'Today for the first time in my adult life, I am ashamed of the current U.S.President!' I did not serve in the military but my love of country parallels that of people like my late uncle who bled red, white and blue. As a second generation Serbian-American who's heritage produced many patriotic military men and women who fought for freedom both in the United States as well as in the former Yugoslavia (most recently in Kosovo against the slaughter of Serbs by Muslim extremists), I implore you to make the American people aware of this little-known or, at least, publicly acknowledged fact.

May God Bless you and your family during these difficult times. Your voice of reason is a welcome change from the insanity plastered across the country by the liberal media. Keep up the great work and thank you for your service to our country."

Tim Howard

Raines and Howard resigned under pressure in late 2004. Howard's Golden Parachute was estimated at $20 Million!

Jim Johnson

Johnson is currently under investigation for taking illegal loans from Countrywide while serving as CEO of Fannie Mae. Johnson's Golden Parachute was estimated at $28 Million.

These three men, plus Barney Frank [D-MA] and Christopher Dodd [D-CT], were in the middle of the US financial catastrophe that started during the Bush 43 years. Bush tried to reign it in but Democrats controlled Congress. Add another Democrat to the list. It was the head of the US Treasury under Bush 43 - - Henry Paulson, 2006-2009. He was given control of the bailouts. While Obama continues to blame Bush 43 and Wall Street for all of our economic problems, Democrats were in control.

This Obama government is rotten to the core! Are we naive or just not paying attention? Vote in 2012. it is the most important election of our lives.

Note from TheRightJack: Obama likes to blame the sorry US financial mess on the policies of the past. The policies of the past were created by Democrats and Republicans in the US Congress. Democrats had control of Congress for 40 years until the mid 1990s. Republicans went along to get along. Then Democrats took total control of Congress from 2006 to 2010. Then for two of those years, 2008 to 2010, Democrats had control of all three branches of the US government. Add to this, the actions by Jimmy Carter and Bill Clinton who fought hard for housing loans to people who could not make their loan payments.
